#224. The Old House.

  11.5 x 9, oil on hard artists board. "Gilbert Munger" lower right. A label on the back shows "#6." There are four almost identical versions of this painting. See #255, #324, and #338 for the other three. Because #324 is dated 1871 we can be certain this is a painting depicts a US scene. The log building is a water mill. It is unknown where in the US the mill is located. But perhaps the article in the San Francisco Examiner on 21 March 1870 that lists a painting The Old Mill (Maryland) by either Munger or John Ross Key is a good hint.

This version was bought at an unidentified east coast auction on 28 February 2004. The buyer sold it to Williams Fine Art in Salt Lake City a month later. Image from author's photo.
