#297. A Peasant in a Forest Clearing.

  18 x 14.5, oil on panel. "Gilbert Munger" lower left. This painting follows the style of Munger's paintings of birch trees (#220, #268, #285, #298). According to family lore, it has been in the same family since purchased new in London in the 1800s. The most recent owner was bequeathed it in 2014. The painting was sold at Christies 19th Century European Art 21 January 2015 auction (sale 10358) held in London as lot 96 for £1,500 + 25%. As with Munger's other birch tree paintings, this one is assigned an English locale, although there is a chance some of them are French. Image from owner's email.
