#327. Le Plaine de Chailly.

? x ?, oil on canvas (presumably). "Gilbert Munger" bottom front. The painting title refers to a flat area near the southern edge of the village of Barbizon. A scrapbook kept by Munger's niece Myra Dowd Monroe [1872-1966] that was given to the Madison (CT) Historical Society contains a small snapshot of this painting with the hand written notations:
From sale of Library of R. N. Oakman Jr.    Collection of Lyman A. Mills    Gilbert Munger 1884     Photo fails to show this picture adequately - superb in color - middle distance very Rosseau or Daughby
Mr. Oakman is probably Richard Nickerson Oakman Jr (1843-1908), a business man who lived in Franklin County Massachusetts. Mr. Mills was the Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut from 1899 to1901. He had at least 15 Mungers. He likely bought this painting at the library sale. Its present whereabouts is unknown. Digital image of the historical society snapshot provided by Bob Gundersen, Collections Chair.
