#123. Teepees by the River Bank.

14 x 23.5, oil on canvas. "Gilbert Munger" lower left. This painting is assigned a Wyoming location based on the similarly of the rock towers in the background to those in chromolithograph #149 and the description of paintings in an 1872 Aug 10 article. The scene depicted in this painting corresponds closely to the broad alluvial terrace and low Eocene bluffs immediately upstream from the Union Pacific Railroad bridge at Green River Station, Wyoming. The defining elements—a mature Fremont cottonwood on a low river terrace, a wide, slow‑moving channel, and rounded, horizontally bedded bluffs—are characteristic of this specific reach of the Green River. Sold for $5,000 + 10% at Butterfield & Butterfield, San Francisco, auction of 20 June 1985, lot 3353. Image from auction catalog.
