#345. Artist Painting at Berkeley Springs.
? × ?, oil on canvas under glass. "Gilbert Munger" lower left; "Berkeley Springs, Aug 8, 1894, G.M." reverse in black paint, apparently in Munger's hand. This painting show the artist, presumably intended to be Munger himself, painting a scene in the woods at Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. See painting #52 for another view of these woods, painted by Munger at the time. An "E. MARY & FILS / 26, RUE, CHAPTAL, PARIS" materials supplier mark appears on the canvas. Several paintings in this catalog have this stamp. This painting was discovered by Patrick Storey of Washington DC while helping a neighbor downsize. The neighbor was given the painting by her aunt who apparently received it directly from Munger. Image from Mr. Storey's email.
